Corvette Wiper Switch Removal 1978-1982
To remove the wiper switch, remove the speedo and tach housing; once you do
this you can reach inside the pad to remove the switch.  
To get the speedo and tach housing out of the car you should remove the horn
button  
Remove the steering wheel. To remove the steering wheel you do not need a
wheel puller. Take out he Phillips head screws number 4 in the picture, this is the
easy way!  These screws hold the spokes to the hub.  
Remove the center lower dash pad cover number 5.  
After you remove this cover, you will see the lower steering column bracket.
There are two large bolts (number 6 in the picture, that the column up. Remove
these two bolts.  
Remove the speedo housing screws from the car (7), then reach under the dash
behind the speedo housing and unplug the printed circuit board located in the
middle of the housing, and the speedo cable. Taking the speedo cable loose
sounds easy but they can be cantankerous to remove from the speedo head. A
clip holds the cable in place and to release the clip you will need to push it
towards the back of the car (toward you), while pulling the cable loose.  A little
advice here is to push the cable toward the rear of the car while pushing the clip
in the same direction.  When you feel the clip push all the way down, then pull
the cable to the front of the car.  
Once you have the housing (number 1 in the picture) loose from the dash pad,
you want to push down on the steering column and pull the cluster forward while
tilting it downward from top to bottom (Show by number 8). Pushing down on the
steering column will allow you additional room to get the housing out. When
removing the housing be careful not the snag the printed circuit on the back of
the housing on the top of the dash pad opening. The circuit always tries to hit the
top of the dash pad when you remove them. Gently pulling the housing out and
while tilting it will make it easier to remove.  
Once the speedo housing is out, you should be able to reach behind the dash
pad and see the switch (number 2 in the picture). The switch has either one or
two connectors on it. Cars with pulse wipers will have two harnesses that are
saddled on top one another. Unplug all the harness connectors at the same time.
The wiper switch (number 2 in the picture) is held in place by two fingers (number
9 in the picture) on it and one single screw (10). If you remove the screw from the
switch, you can tilt it out of the dash pad lifting upward to remove.  
To install reverse the above procedure. When you put the new switch in the car
you MUST be careful not to over tighten the screw that holds it in place. The
backside of the dash pad has a stand on it for the screw and this stand will break
easily if the screw is over tightened. If you break this stand, it is not an easy
repair. Should you break it, you will need to find a product called “Plastic Fusion”
or “Plastic Weld” Both work outstanding and are great products to use on ABS
plastic repairs. The issue is obtaining room to repair the broken stand.
